He opened the door slowly as he expected her to be watching fireworks again but the room was all dark except for the light from the hall. He could see that Ning Wang was already in bed and that she wear looking away like she did not want to talk at all. “Are you asleep already?” he tried with a gentle voice while looking at her but she did not move so he closed the door and walked over to her bed and knelled in front of it. “I am sorry I yelled at you, but you know it was past your bedtime” he tried and this time she moved around and with a sad look she answered “I am sorry that I wanted to see the fireworks so much” a moment of silence followed before they gave each other a hug which made Ning Wang smile again. “Will you tell a bedtime story?” she asked with a interested voice and Jiahao Wang just nodded and stood up from his kneeling position and removed the curtains so the fireworks entered the room and Ning Wang used the chance to get out of bed and run over to get her favorite book and toy so she could enjoy the story. But Jiahao Wang smiled and shaked his head gentle while removing the book from her hand. “I know it is your favorite but today I will tell you another story” Ning Wang turned a bit sad as she had hoped she could her about princesses and dragon’s and was about to complain about it but keep quiet as she did not want her grandfather to become more angry tonight even it had been her fault. Jiahao Wang could see that her eyes was sad over that he would not read that one so instead he walked out of the door “Just a minute” he said as he left the room and soon he was back with the old case form earlier and continued “I know you love the book very much but I felt it was time to tell you a real story instead of all that fantasy” He wanted to say more but could see how Ning Wang’s eyes got more and more focused on the old case he had in his hand so he cut the story short and continued “I did not plan for you to see this before in long time, but here is a sword which have been in our family for as long as the moon have been in the sky” Ning Wang did not listen at all as she watched the sword but still managed to be able to think and ask a question “Is the story about this sword, grandfather?” Jiahao Wang laughed because he knew his grand daughter was not stupid at all but still so he just replied “Yes, but first you need to know the backstory and let me warn you, it is stories for little girls even I will do my best to tell it gentle to you, then you can always get the bad version later” Ning Wang did not care as she was used to hear stories about dragons and heroes so why would this be any different. “Am I in the story grandfather?” she asked gentle as she tried to figure out what the story was about without spoiling the story and Jiahao Wang looked at her with seriously eyes as he was worried about something which made her quickly replied her own answer “I am sorry, grandfather” which made Jiahao Wang get his happy look back while he replied “I don’t know sweety… let us see” and the he pretented to read a page in a book before he replied “No, you are not but let us call the hero in this book for Ling Wang just so we feel we are family” before he could finish Ning Wang already had a new question “Who is she?” Jiahao smiled again as big rocket explode in the window almost turning the whole room red with its power before he answered “She is the hero as I said and she is a blind girl” Ning Wang broke in again and asked “Why is she blind grandfather?” Jiahao Wang replied quickly “I am sure the story will tell you why so please no more questions now so I can tell you the story” A new rocket exploded behind them this time it turned the room green and Ning Wang smiled before nodding and answered “Yeah tell the story grandfather” like she was the one waiting for him to get ready while she had been the one distruping the story. Jiahao Wang took the sword and put it in it’s case again so no one would become cut from it and then he took her at his lap with her blanket around them and watched the fireworks for a second before he prepreade his voice and started “Our story begins in a small town Jiudu which is not far from Beijing in China, here lived a young girl named Ling Wang with her parents, the famous general Xiao Chang who had helped the emperor many times and ways and in returned had gotten premisson to marry Lan Wang the emperor’s favorite concubine…”
Ning Wang looked at him and knew she had crossed the line to see the fireworks so started to cleaned up the mess she had made while Jiahao Wang walked out of the bathroom and into the living room while still looking very seriously. Jiahao Wang thought to himself that this was the first time she would go to bed where they were not friends so he started top think of an idea of how he could get the good mood back and suddenly his eyes turned from the serious look to a happy one as he remembered that her mother had been like that too in that age and it had helped to tell the family story and this time he would tell as two stories as the story was long so she could not hear it all in one night anyway. But now she had to brush her teeth and clean the mess up first before he would announce that he would give her a bedtime story while she could watch the fireworks outside.
The time flew a bit while he waited for his girl to enter the living room but as the toothbrush finally stopped sounding, he hear the door closed and small steps going to her bedroom instead and the living room like he had expected as she always came to say good night no matter what had happen. Slowly he stood up from the chair and quietly walked to the walking closet in the hall and took down an old case down. He opened the case, it had ancient sword in it but it was still sharp, he took it out and swung it a few times before whispered “I am going to tell your story tonight, please help me not turn her into her mother” and then he hurried packing it away and slowly walk towards the door to Ning Wang’s bedroom.
Ning Wang turned against her grandfather and looked at him before turning back to the fireworks and did not mind it was past her bedtime now. Jiahao Wang looked at the clock before he with a certain dry voice announced “it is time for bed young lady” while he took a step closer to her as the words left his mouth but as he was about to put his hand on her she just turned around and looked at him with the biggest eyes ever begging to stay and watch the fireworks but he just shaked his head like it was nothing. He was about to take a hard grasp in her but by the time he reached the point of his body she had disappeared and left the room. He smiled to himself without laughing to make sure she did not hear him and then yelled with a big higher power “Brush your teeth now and you can watch the fireworks from your bed until you fall asleep” he started to walk back to the door and heard the door to the bathroom open and the toothbrush start running. He had still had some power over her and walked to the bathroom door to talk about the rules around here but the bathroom was empty with the toothbrush running like crazy and it had spit the toothpaste anywhere. He was a bit annoyed now and yelled even louder than before “Ning Wang, come here now” some fast steps was hear and a door was opened and closed before some small tiny quiet steps came closer to the bathroom before a sadly face appeared and replied “Sorry grandfather, I just wanted to see the fireworks so badly” Ning Wang had almost tears in eyes to show how sad she was but Jiahao just keep his hard style and with a commanding voice replies “No more fireworks before this mess is cleaned and your teeth is white is like stars”
There are many types of stories, some are well known, others have turned into fairy tales, which again have turned into legends while others died out and gets forgotten again. Let me ask you this? Does stories have to being told between people for a million times to become legends or be hundreds of years old. I don’t know your answer, but this story will be my answer as this story took place just as much in the past as in our time, so for me it is one of those stories which maybe are told to people, but not remembered as a story as it doesn’t grow big but I still feel it is a story which needs to be told so let’s begin at the beginning.
The sun had gone to bed so the sky should’ve been dark, but the moon was full giving, it is light to the people on the streets of Taipei, Taiwan together with the stars, but they were not alone on the sky as hundreds of sky flowers colored the sky in millions of colors like it was daylight. Rockets flew to the sky before ending with a big bang and spread out red balls of light together with the smaller but still powerful batteries. People were celebrating New Year’s Eve like there was no tomorrow and in every apartment and house their was a party, except for Ning Wang’s apartment even she had done her best to make it a party, her grandfather had already told her to go to bed even it was only 8.57pm. She looked at the clock and counted down to 9pm as she knew she was not going to stay up all the way to 12am like all the others. A door opened up behind her and the light from the hall entered the room and the shadow of an old man followed. The old man was her grandfather, Jiahao Wang and she had been living with him for as long she could remember and when she tried to ask about her parents or other family she had just been told the hard truth. They were all killed in an accident, a car accident if she remembered right. “I am 8 years old now, I wanna watch the fireworks all night, ” she yelled with a begging sweet voice which left her grandfather standing in the door speechless and just watch the fireworks in the windows behind her. “She is like her mother when she was at that age, never going to bed…” his thought was interrupted by heavy the heavy bell from the clock telling the time had passed 9pm and time for bed for Ning Wang.
